Owl English Preschool
Hualien, Taiwan
The School |
The Owl School is quickly emerging as one of Hualien's premier English language preschools. The school opened summer of 2002 and is located on the outskirts of town in a beautiful area surrounded by vegetable gardens, rice paddies and banana and papaya orchards. The excellent facilities include a resource center with library, learning aids and toys. There are three classrooms (home rooms) located in two adjacent buildings. The school grounds contain playground equipment with grass and cement play areas and are beautifully landscaped and maintained. Classes begin at 8:45 a.m. with rotations every thirty minutes and different curriculum depending on the day of the week. Classes break for lunch and a nap between 12 noon and 3 p.m. From 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. there are three more 30 minute rotations. There are generally three native English teachers (one in each classroom) and each has a Chinese aid. |
The Students |
Students range in age from 3 to 6 years old and come from families where learning English is important. Students' parents often speak English and many have visited or studied in the United States or England. The students are bright, learn quickly and it is not necessary to speak Chinese in order to communicate. In fact, speaking Chinese at the school is discouraged. |
The Experience |
Teaching English preschool to Chinese children is a wonderfully fulfilling experience. Chinese children are generally well behaved, disciplined and are eager to learn. Teaching at Owl School provides a unique Asian experience in a beautiful rural setting but with state-of-the-art facilities and teaching resources. Living accommodations are very comfortable and include ADSL Internet connections, computer, TV/DVD and modern appliances. Other teaching opportunities are often in crowded cities with limited access to open spaces. Owl School provides teachers the opportunity to immerse themselves in a foreign culture while still living comfortably. |
Administration |
Yuling Lin is the school owner and administrator. Her experience includes degrees from Brigham Young University in Family Science and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She has also taught English and elementary school. YuLing is energetic, hardworking, fun loving and is dedicated to providing a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both students and teachers. English speaking Chinese aids assist with teaching and individually work with students in various situations. |
